Well, Tom's relationship with Aunt Polly is quite an interesting one. Although he is always doing things to annoy her, and although she is always scolding him or punishing him, they really love each other, and she is terribly hurt when she thinks he didn't care about her enough to let her know where he was the time he went off to live on an island with Huck and Joe. When he tells her that he wrote her a message on a piece of bark and left it in his pocket, she is really happy when she finds out he is telling the truth.
